Birds, Insects & Bats in flight (outdoors) Page 8

A few minutes later (without any prompting from us) it took off and started flying over the fields, coming quite close to us for this unusually nicely lit portrait.

This buzzard appeared from our left and started to turn into the wind (blowing towards the post from our position), saw us and basically Panicked - claws down, twisting in flight and calling before accelerating into the distance. It is a shame that humans are so feared, but it is a good survival tactic.

A different buzzard to 'usual' visitors flew over the brook to the north. This is a montage of 3 frames at about 8 frames/second accurately positioned by aligning the background details in each image - not usually possible against the sky.

The Buzzard then got disturbed from it's rest by a territorial Jackdaw. The jackdaw started about 2 buzzard lengths behind the buzzard in this accurate montage. We left the Jackdaw out for the next 2 frames as they overlaid the image of the buzzard in the preceding frames, but the Jackdaw was climbing fast and re-appears above the Buzzard for the last 2 frames.

We think we have a buzzard family of Mum, Dad and one juvenile using the thermals and updraft from local geography to go off and hunt. This one came quite close, banking as it approached (hence the increasing size left to right) and we couldn't resist this montage, much too closely spaced for reality but echoing what you see as your eyes follow the bird.

Our friendly neighbour farmer phoned us from his tractor with news that the 'buzzard has just joined me on the posts' and out we rushed to not be able to see it! But we were ready when it flew majestically over the hedge in front of us. Here is one of images.

Buzzard near our patch get routinely harassed by Rooks from the local Rookeries. This Buzzard (the lower bird) has unusually light plumage.

A Buzzard flies by, lit by the low morning sun.
These are reasonably accurately spaced and positioned.

For about 20 minutes the local 'Buzzard family' of 2 adults and 2 juveniles circled in the air over the adjoining farmland and our patch.

This buzzard was flying over a freshly cut hedge just after harvest.

The Buzzard is flying over the sprouting Wheat crop (also visible in the background). Perhaps 100 black-headed Gulls can be seen over the fields at many times of day eating either the un-germinated seed or the young plants.

Buzzards have returned to the trees at the Brook, and are hunting from them and the 11KV power line crossbars. We have seen 3 Buzzards at once in the area.

The Buzzard then turned towards the camera and from detail in the cloud edge we constructed this accurate montage. The first 5 images (from the left) are at about 7fps, but the remainder are alternate frames to avoid too much overlap.

The local Buzzard took off from a nearby Ash tree but turned back on itself in flight and then made this abrupt change in direction in only about a third of a second. Bird positions are arbitrary here, but the first 6 frames (moving downwards) are contiguous over about 1 second.

One of the buzzards flew over us viewed through the branches of a Black poplar tree on our access track.

After weeks of absence in the dull weather 3 Buzzards made an unexpected appearance. 2 flew off but the third bird did a few loops a few hundred metres away before flying off in another direction.
First a pair of a single wing flap with alternate wings lit by the lowering sun (2 images about 300mS apart but correct spacing unknown)

Next day a Buzzard carried a rabbit along the line of the brook. The bird was flying into wind (making poor progress) but we noticed that it was doing the Osprey trick of lining up the prey with the direction of flight to reduce drag. A brief skirmish with a rook had it back in it's normal feet together position, but quickly reverted to the aligned position here. 7 days later we saw a similar flight but the rabbit was just hanging down as we usually see.
