Birds, Insects & Bats in flight (outdoors) Page 15

Convolvulus flowers brighten up the ground at this time of year.
In about 1992 we had dug out 'Round Pond' but not yet lined or filled it, and it erupted with a carpet of thousands of these flowers right down to the bottom about 2 metres deep. We conclude that the soil must be 'saturated' with long-lived seeds awaiting their chance.

Next morning a much rarer siting - a cormorant flying over our patch.

Another sequence (not accurately spaced) gives you a closer look at the Cormorant's wings in up and down positions.

Passes by a couple of Cormorants, not as high as usual, gave us a chance for some pics.

This cormorant in flight happened to be near a well defined airliner contrail which provides a 'static' reference that allows re-construction of accurate spacing. We are not fond of Airliner contrails (which sometimes veil the whole otherwise clear sky) but this one (bottom right) was at least 'useful'.

These 4 images are accurately montaged against the clouds - these are big birds that really pick up some speed.

We occasionally see a Cormorant or pair flying high overhead, but here a single bird gave us this chance for a reasonably close image. Accurately positioned at about 5 fps .

We usually see Cormorants as individuals, occasionally a pair, high flying overhead, so this skein of 8 was a first. The skein gradually drifted in our direction before splitting momentarily into groups of 3 and 5, one of the groups shown here.

We don't often seen Cormorants flying over, but about 20 minutes after dawn this pair flew almost overhead from the South. Whenever we see them they manage with very little wing movement.

The 2 groups then merged back together into a neat Skein that flew almost overhead.

Out at 07:40 watching for larks, kestrel or anything else heard a distant cuckoo call and saw a distant atypical bird flying in our general direction. Beats the usual cuckoo call right over your head as a sort of 'missed me'.

This Drone-fly was hovering over one of our meadow paths. We photographed one at a fast enough shutter speed (1/8000 sec) to almost freeze the wing motion . These are NOT consecutive frames - just 3 reasonable efforts arranged for effect.
Drone flies are Honey Bee mimics (making predators wary of being stung) but Swallows can somehow tell the difference, and gobble them up!

This Dunnock was fluttering her (?) wings in the top of the hedge, and we expected a male to visit and courtship feed her. But he didn't.
