Birds, Insects & Bats in flight (outdoors) Page 17

First 'sighting' of a frog here this year would be this fun if rather inelegant image.

This pair didn't have it all their own way - another individual (probably a male) fluttered around them but they ignored him.

A few hours after the Buzzards found a nearby thermal, this glider spirals up in a thermal on the sun-facing slope to our south.

This glider appeared in a Thermal. Taking a frame about every 2 seconds we hoped to produce an accurate montage. But it would have been as wide as a desk so we have contracted the gaps and simply softened the cloud discontinuities. The Green arrow is the first exposure, moving counter clockwise.

Gliders are among the more welcome aerial visitors being quiet and graceful, unlike helicopters on their way to Silverstone Racetrack and the military Chinooks which shake the whole house. On 8 August we saw a series of about 40 gliders gaining height in a local thermal.

A few fleeting glimpses of Goldfinches is augmented by this self portrait as one comes in to land.

Goldfinches have done well this year, through we haven't spotted any of the nests. The fluffy down in the beak was put down on the branch and left there as the bird flew off.

A couple of juvenile Swallows perched on main electricity cables for what must have been a late brood for these youngsters to be waiting to be fed - supplementary feeding 'on the wing' is more typical for this time of year. Here one of the Juvenile Swallows was briefly joined by a Goldfinch landing on the wire.

The plethora of gulls (mostly Black-headed) that descended for the harrowing and sowing of the surrounding field have gone, but this great Black-backed Gull made a nice flyby showing both sides of his wings nicely lit.

This gull was following the adult Great Black-backed gull shown above, and we assume from size and general appearance that it must be a juvenile.

This female Great Spotted Woodpecker looks lovely and clean after her moult as she flies past the kitchen window.

There are a pair of Great Spotted Woodpeckers visiting various places around the house. Do hope they are breeding somewhere near.

We have lost count of the Great Spotted Woodpecker juveniles, now with the full spread from 'Feed Me' to 'I'll Feed Myself' including the 'I'll accept what's offered but find my own as well'.

A juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker arrives behind an apparently oblivious Grey Squirrel. When we first saw this we wished we had another frame a second or two later.

Is this juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker watching the wasp?
Is the bird planning to try and catch it?
We wish we knew!

Another squabble over access to the peanut feeder in the freezing weather. Not that there isn't plenty for them all.

An unusual view in the snow of an otherwise fairly typical aerial skirmish between a great tit and robin.
