Male Chaffinch with his beak gradually turning blue ready for the breeding season flying low across the photo site. It was chasing another bird you just catch on the right edge on the frame.

Male chaffinches seem incapable of meeting without squabbling. This is one of the birds fluttering over his rival.

Down in the hedge bottom this male chaffinch is twisting exquisitely as it flies over a female or juvenile another frame height below.

The flying male Chaffinch's claws are curled so we think that this is a greeting to the female on the ground rather than a threat.

This male chaffinch is threatening a Great Spotted Woodpecker at the left, but the Woodpecker was not impressed

The Chaffinch and Robin seem to share about the same level of aggression and are often seen squabbling over access to the feeding sites.

"Look - no wings"

An elegant male chaffinch touching down on a fir cone. An unexpectedly large proportion of landings are on these rather than the ground.

Barely touched down, we see this winter colours male Chaffinch with his claw tips barely on the wood.
