Birds, Insects & Bats in flight (outdoors) Page 34

Did the Red Kite want another look at us before it departed? We doubt it, but it gave us a final look at this glorious bird (arranged for effect rather than accuracy) before it drifted South towards Milton Keynes.

The Red Kite's languid flight eventually took it almost overhead of us. There is no doubt the bird was keeping it's eyes on the strange creatures (us) below.

If we keep still the Kites mostly ignore us, as this one flying overhead.

This single image seemed to us to capture the endless harassment Red Kites get from the Rooks - usually 3 to 10 rooks (sometimes FAR more) chasing the bird with one or two brave or particularly fit birds doing threatening swoops.
The orange tinge to the sky is from the remnants of Hurricane Ophelia

Light just right to pick up the colours even if the face is turned away.

Our first sighting of a Red Kite since Sep 2013, seen by chance from a Window followed by a stampede for the camera and better view. These two images taken several seconds apart show both sides of the wing.

More detail of the Red Kite as the first 4 images above

Irregular sightings of Red Kites did catch this flight, accurately spaced at 7 fps, so just under 2 seconds of flight here.

3 Red Kites spent a few days roosting in an Ash tree 150m away, and would be active soon after sunrise

For a couple of minutes this Red Kite wheels round us.

The sightings of our regular large Raptors (Buzzards, and here a Red Kite) have increased this week. These early morning rich colours are 'un-fudged'.

A Red Kite glides by quietly turning towards us, giving us a good look at the top of the bird you don't often see. Very close to accurately spaced.

A Red Kite made quite a low pass over, and we caught this detailed moment.

A Red Kite (one of 2 in the area at the time) made a few passes past us before vanishing into the distance. During winter there are rarely any 'Thermals', so flying has to be performed using hard work rather than gliding on up-currents.

This montage of the Red Kite is as accurately spaced as we can manage from aligning hazy cloud outlines out of this crop.
