Birds, Insects & Bats in flight (outdoors) Page 55

As good an image of the Red Kite as we got at full resolution as it eat it's prey (looks like a pigeon) on the wing.

Still with the prize in it's talons, the Red Kite landed in a distant tree at the brook where it continued to devour the remains.

Not in this Red Kite's finest appearance, but a stunning moment circling overhead.

After flying overhead, the Red Kite flies off.

This is a Red Underwing Moth flying over the ground, complete with shadow to lower right. We have no record of seeing this moth since 2011, and very few images of any of the 'Underwing' moths in flight - they are reluctant to fly in our 'flight tunnel' though we did manage a few pics in 2009 to 2011.

Looking over the farm hedge this Red-Legged partridge was startled into flight. This first image caught the bird flying over the untidy 'turning' area of the farm road which is loose tarmac lumps.

The short flight and rather clumsy landing as one sequence. The hazy green sections are overgrowth from the hedge that the low angle and being only part way up the mound resulted in. This also confused the camera's continuous auto-focus into making the images rather irregular as it tried to make sense of the focus point information. The stuttering final stop is genuine.

'Plucked' (sorry) from the montage is a better view of the landing, a sort of bounce along affair that is shown accurately here. Landing on the hard concrete is not the Red-Legged partridge best landing surface.

Our sole remaining local farmer has taken up digital photography and kindly let us have this image he captured of a Ringed Plover flock wheeling through the evening gloom over his farm. We saw the flock in the distance but couldn't even identify them.

Robin and Dunnock disputing the right to occupy the site!

Although probably a line-of-site effect, this juxtaposition of Fieldmouse (Wood Mouse) and Robin has a certain drama.

Peaceful co-existence - for a few months of breeding season anyway

It seems a long time since seeing a sharp photo of an in-flight skirmish. Here a Robin (left) and Great Tit think it worth a little conflict to take control of the food on offer.

A Robin on the ground threatens another flying over, while ignoring the female Chaffinches on either side.
Robins look lovely but are aggressive little birds.

The Great Tit (bottom left) is barely landing and already the Robin is launching a territorial attack

As the robin takes off some corn grains and a fallen leaf go flying as well.

Not quite crossing in mid-air, this Robin and Dunnock apparently about to collide makes a fun visual image. The shadows in the original image indicate that the Dunnock is about a third of a metre (1 foot) in front of the Robin.

A couple of days later at the other ground-level camera a Robin and Dunnock having a serious go at each other.

Some sort of skirmish has left the Great Tit nearly upside down.

Ouch!
Robin are very territorial, and this one is having a go at the poor innocent juvenile Bluetit who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time! The original full frame needed selective sharpening to make the action clear, but it is a single moment as seen here.
