Both the Jackdaw (smaller bird) and the Rook seem to have been intending
to land on the Meadow post. Size wins!

Whenever the wind is strong the rooks and other corvids can be seen
obviously playing or showing off in the updrafts over the fields,
and here at the top of the local Lombardy Poplar tree.
The top bare twig isn't really stiff enough for
their weight but that doesn't stop them trying to land on it.
Here we think the bird was using the beak as an extra grip.
Despite several tries it never got a stable perch.

Oh dear - we think Rooks look delightful.
That's what living with them for 25 years does to the brain!

Exit from the house startled the female Kestrel, and it was soon threatening a Rook.
But by the time the camera had found the action the tables had turned on the Kestrel,
now being 'seen off' by the Rook.

The unexpected re-appearance of this 'antique' rose complete with a
'Marmalade' Hover-fly. Many modern roses are useless to the wildlife,
but this old cultivar obviously has lots of goodies on offer.

Rough-legged Buzzards are said to be able to hover, and this one was certainly
flying very slowly - the image separation is about doubled from 7 fps. The 'Rough
Legged' term comes from the legs being covered in feathers almost down to the Talons.

A tramp across the adjacent field startled this Short-eared owl in
the grass perhaps 50m ahead. A new sighting for us here.
Apparently they are often seen in daylight. It flew about for a
minute or two before departing.

A surprise was seeing this short-tail Field Vole inside this peanut feeder.
While we watched the vole circled around the central column at least twice while
obviously looking for the easiest nut to pull through the mesh.
4 days saw later a repeat performance (not shown), so this may be
a daily visit we only sometimes notice.

into the blue. There seem to be several pairs in the crop to our
east.

This joyous little creature flew for us 4 times at various
distances and lighting. Here are a couple of the best images we got.
This is the bird that normally hovers like a speck in the sky -
we were lucky to get this one hovering low down.

This is a montage of a single skylark ascending, images a second or two apart.
This is the first time we remember getting a skylark image that is more
than a speck in the sky.

We have shrunk the gaps between the bird images so that you can see some detail.

The arrival of Arable farming brings it's own set of disappointments,
but for us a great plus in an explosion of the number of Skylarks.

A Skylark ascending, but with no points of reference we can't get
the spacing accurate. But the bird is gorgeous!
