A Bullfinch in a bush near the main pond was quartering it for buds. Oh well - the bush makes plenty to overcome this decimation .

This female Bullfinch worked her way up the bush/tree by the edge of the pond and ended up in the sunshine.
Striking Patterning with lovely Subtle colours.

This is the female (left) and male Bullfinch sharing an Ash tree near the house to eat the seeds. They were never quite close enough together in the tree for a single frame containing both, but this montage should give you the idea.

Next day we spotted a female Bullfinch in a similar place, but her chosen comestible was desiccated blackberry fruits of which there is no shortage. Dried fruit mixed with seeds - yummy!

We have now seen 2 male and 2 female Bullfinches foraging for blackberry fruit in this Blackberry 'bush'. But rarely close enough to make a real 'pair' image.
Here we offer a female tucking into the human equivalent of currants.

Here is one of the female Bullfinches picking another 'dried fruit'.

For several minutes the female Bullfinch pecked off dry Blackberry fruit by hovering for a few seconds in front of the bunch. Here you see moments from two separate flights to pick fruit from the bunch, each time returning to an obscured twig above to consume her prize.

And here is his 'wife'.

Bullfinch in the hedge along the Bridleway to the North of our patch. The shrivelled remains of the blackberries are still an attraction, and the leaves seem to have survived the recent frosts.

The photo sites have only recorded Bullfinches in the last couple of years. This is a male who put in a partial appearance 2 days before.

A Bullfinch male carrying insects in his beak - certainly the first such sighting here. At the same site we saw him again next day and the day after that we glimpsed a female, so we so hope they are breeding somewhere on our patch.

This single male bullfinch was eating the buds on a cherry tree about 30m from the house. This pushes even our biggest lens to the limit, so rather than a couple of rather poor images we have accurately montaged two images about 1 minute apart. The fantastic colours are 'real' and not enhanced.

Many birds feed on the emerging catkins of the silver birches, and among them we spotted this lovely male Bullfinch stuffing itself.

Each year we delight in the return of the Bullfinches. This year the patch of ground weeds (near an unused gate) where we usually see them feeding just didn't produce anything but a bit of grass, but we spotted this male on a bush by the main pond, feasting himself on the desiccated seeds of stinging nettles. That's the first time we have noticed Nettle seeds being eaten, and had not thought of them as a 'resource'.

This Bullfinch male (and his out of shot mate) were feeding in a shingle bed covered in weeds, decimating the seed heads and flowers.

A male Bullfinch spent several minutes picking desiccated blackberry fruit, spending several seconds working the fruit in the beak/crop, before bending down for another. The sun was shining as you can see from the bright background, but frustratingly the bird was in the shadow of the house.

We occasionally see a wonderful Bullfinch glowing in the foliage. This one was standing on this dead stem, flying off a metre or two and returning, often to exactly the same position - top and bottom left have top right between them. Bottom right was a return further down the stem.

A surprise and delightful visit outside the living room window (unfortunately with brightly lit snow behind) of 'Mr and Mrs' Bullfinch. First the male.
