Birds - Buzzard Page 10

Image Taken on 19 Dec 2018 at 10:15    Image of day on 27 Jan 2019

Not many sightings of Buzzards or Red Kites at the moment, so enjoy this moment of a Buzzard powering upwards behind the power lines.

A different buzzard to 'usual' visitors flew over the brook to the north. This is a montage of 3 frames at about 8 frames/second accurately positioned by aligning the background details in each image - not usually possible against the sky.

The Buzzard then got disturbed from it's rest by a territorial Jackdaw. The jackdaw started about 2 buzzard lengths behind the buzzard in this accurate montage. We left the Jackdaw out for the next 2 frames as they overlaid the image of the buzzard in the preceding frames, but the Jackdaw was climbing fast and re-appears above the Buzzard for the last 2 frames.

We think we have a buzzard family of Mum, Dad and one juvenile using the thermals and updraft from local geography to go off and hunt. This one came quite close, banking as it approached (hence the increasing size left to right) and we couldn't resist this montage, much too closely spaced for reality but echoing what you see as your eyes follow the bird.

We were startled by a whoosh of wings followed by a loud avian scream right over our heads. This Buzzard had just landed on the top of the 11kv power pole right by us, realised the mistake of landing near humans, and immediately took off.
The Buzzard made several more calls as they flew away, as you see here

We generally try to avoid pictures of birds with their nictitating membrane (a semi transparent second eyelid) over the eye.
But here the bird is using it to 'blink' closed for less than 140mS (seventh of a second)

Finally a detailed look at the Buzzard in flight.

Our friendly neighbour farmer phoned us from his tractor with news that the 'buzzard has just joined me on the posts' and out we rushed to not be able to see it! But we were ready when it flew majestically over the hedge in front of us. Here is one of images.

Buzzard near our patch get routinely harassed by Rooks from the local Rookeries. This Buzzard (the lower bird) has unusually light plumage.

Now 2 halves of the montage for more detail.

We catch this Buzzard's flight while the bird is over the main road in flapping flight, and watch as the bird changes to gliding along the 11kV cables before swooping up to arrive at a cable at 0 m.p.h. Masterful control!
First a montage of the whole sequence, starting at one frame intervals, changing to alternate frames and finally a few 'selected' as the bird lands (the last 2 shuffled along the wire in the paint package).

A Buzzard flies by, lit by the low morning sun.
These are reasonably accurately spaced and positioned.

For about 20 minutes the local 'Buzzard family' of 2 adults and 2 juveniles circled in the air over the adjoining farmland and our patch.

This buzzard was flying over a freshly cut hedge just after harvest.

The Buzzard is flying over the sprouting Wheat crop (also visible in the background). Perhaps 100 black-headed Gulls can be seen over the fields at many times of day eating either the un-germinated seed or the young plants.

Buzzards have returned to the trees at the Brook, and are hunting from them and the 11KV power line crossbars. We have seen 3 Buzzards at once in the area.

A pair of images a few seconds apart as the Buzzard circled showing the top and then bottom of the bird.
