We guess this must be a pair of Chaffinches - they arrived only 2 minutes apart.

A little story helped along by a bit of brightening and sharpening of the magpie in the gloom away from the flashgun, but a genuine single frame.

Sometimes when you see a bird in flight you fleetingly see colours not visible when the bird is perched. Here you can see an unexpected green patch hidden when this Chaffinch has its wings folded.

Maybe not ...

The male Chaffinch is surrounded by flies of which he also has a beakful, and he was singing at the same time without dropping them!

All the birds are very territorial. Here a male Chaffinch appear to be threatening an innocent yellowhammer.

This is a montage of a pair of Chaffinches that visited the site an hour apart. The female is on the left with a corn grain in her beak.

Two montages to tell little stories.
In the first the two outer birds are approaching simultaneously (with no hint of threat) but too far apart to make a good picture. But the next frame 5 minutes later showed them apparently enjoying each other's company so a long thin take on the 2 suggested itself.

These male Chaffinches can't resist a bit of a squabble even when food is short in the snow.

These 2 male chaffinches are already squabbling over territory.

We think this is a pair of young Chaffinches involved in a typical sibbling squabble.

What is probably a pair of chaffinches were seen in a number of images at this site. Note how the blue sheen on the male's beak has now almost gone.

Sure he was eating the buds/flowers but never caught him at it.

Another squabble over access to the peanut feeder in the freezing weather. Not that there isn't plenty for them all.

Bit of behaviour we have not noticed before - male chaffinches pestering a perched kestrel until it moves on.

A quite common occurrence - a robin threatening chaffinch male.

Ref: 20101214_d3a_20101009_1757_125_fb2 pheasant male sitting + chaffinch male landing (q) + attacking robin in flight (crop 3)(r+mb id@576).jpg

But here you see the event in its original context, which somehow changes everything.

Some sort of skirmish between a robin & chaffinch male. A minute or so later a chaffinch was back feeding so we assume the exchange was short lived.
