Birds - Ducks Page 9

Arriving at the main pond startled this pair of Mallard ducks. It appears that the female (right) took off about a second before the male. Accurately positioned birds shown in their genuine relative positions during about 1 second of the pairs flight.

A pair of Mallard flying in to a pond to the right as a reasonably accurate montage at 7 fps. You can see she was overtaking him - quite normal - she says where they go!

We currently have 2 pairs of Mallard Ducks feeding in our ponds. Here one pair circled the site a couple of times before choosing the pond furthest from us. Here is a one frame close-up

This pair of Mallard ducks were photographed at about 7 fps. Ducks really do fly fast - this is half a second of flight in an accurate montage (based on cloud perceived motion being MUCH slower).

A slightly delayed feeding time - a pair of Mallard ducks fly by (at 7 fps so they fly at s-p-e-e-d) but decide against landing until the humans have gone.

A pair of Mallard Ducks whizz by.
This is all in less than one third of a second - Ducks fly FAST!

The female Mallard ducks get a bit of harassment from the 3 males, but this male was avidly 'protecting her honour' or 'defending his rights' depending on how you view it.

Our pair of Mallard Duck are not happy to see us arrive close to the edge of the main pond, and quietly walk away into the cover of the Iris 'forest' using the roots of the Iris yet to grow, and matted weeds.

The Mallard Ducks seem to prefer the Round Pond for their night-time roost. At the limit of the camera IR light's reach, here are the Ducks on the water (brightness enhanced for clarity) as the Fox passes by on the bank. The Fox can probably smell them but knows that ducks on the water are out of his reach.

The next night we again see the Mallard Duck pair safe from the passing fox.

The mallard duck pair that spend much of their day in this favourite spot. They are starting the moult and that whole area is littered with feathers.

A Pair of Mallard Ducks sitting at the duck-shaped pond decided to leave as we approached. The female launched first, but the camera was aimed at the male who waited a second or so before following.

The camera followed the male Mallard duck giving this opportunity for a longer montage. The frame rate was about 7 fps but this is alternate frames and it is just chance and the flap rate that means the bird has his wings down in each frame, showing us his luscious speculum.

The above was taken from the house. These ducks are not 'tame' but are used enough to us to not take instant fright. Approaching the pond on foot was enough to see them both take off for a fly round and return when we had gone. He was off to the left but only partly in frame. We love the sheets of water and fine spray at the tips of her wings.

In the same sunshine this pair of Mallard ducks decided to move to another pond as we approached. Before our approach ...

And us a few metres closer. This montage was of a nearly vertical takeoff spread out so you can enjoy the action. Taken at about 7 fps.

A pair of Mallard Duck visit the main pond perhaps a couple of times a day. Feeding is the main item on the agenda - as here.

Togetherness - Mallard Duck style.
Mallard ducks are visiting both the Round Pond (no good pics) and here the main pond. After a good feed this pair have hauled out onto the island.
