Greenfinches reappeared after a summer and autumn absence, and are really aggressive towards each other and any other creature that gets in their way. Here a Great Tit flees the wrath of the Greenfinch.

For 17 years here we have hardly seen a House sparrow (though Tree Sparrows breed freely). Suddenly a Great tit (hole size) nest box on the dead elm stump is being investigated by a male House sparrow. He can only just squeeze in and out, and other potential occupants were lurking. Here a Tree sparrow has just made a hesitant flight by the House sparrow at the hole.

Some sort of skirmish has left the Great Tit nearly upside down.

Robins rule the kitchen window perch ... if there isn't something bigger that wants access!

A Robin (nearer with red breast hidden) chases off a Great Tit with vivid yellow body normally hidden by the wings.

This robin must be almost stationary in the air to be this sharp with a 0.001 second flash. The Great Tit is about to get a surprise.

Looks to us like a robin is guarding his heap of food and this great tit is trying a 'pop-up' approach. The shadow of the great tit particularly appeals - note how the shadow of the body is black but the shadow of the wings is much lighter as the light shines through the wings.

From exactly this date last year at the main feeding site this single exposure contained 2 Robins, 2 Great Tits & a Blue Tit. All doing well again this year so far.

After a several months absence the Tree Sparrows have returned. First seen on a feeder they now seem to have commandeered this Great Tit box. We can see here that a Great Tit isn't pleased but didn't manage to shoo them away. At the moment the birds are only 'prospecting' and looking for winter shelter, but we often get 2 pairs breeding here in Great Tit nestboxes, sometimes including this one. They are rare birds (RSPB Red status) so especially welcome
