Not for the squeamish!
On 28 Apr 2003 we got a whole series of images of herons feasting
on frogs. Also seen as early as mid-February but not this year
yet. More such feasts including Great Crested Newt on the Home
Page > Birds > Herons.

Journalists love finding 'unfortunate' pictures of 'notables' caught
in awkward poses. Well this heron walking to our left with one
leg in the air, looking our way & decorated with daffodils shows
you can make even this hunter look a bit daft!

A long flight well above the horizon and gradually losing height
brought this Heron down to the pond across the brook. You can see
the legs moving relative to the tail as landing becomes more
imminent.

Finally getting too close to the road entrance another 20m or so
to the left, the Heron finally departed on the wing but staying
close to the ground, finally flying over the hedge and vanishing
from our site without re-appearing.

their majestic style.

chased by any of the normally territorial rooks.

This low-flying Heron didn't seem to notice us.
The long neck is often folded back like this in flight and sometimes
for hunting gradually preparing to shoot the head forward.

voltage cable which nevertheless allowed us to make an accurate montage.

A Grey Heron flies low over the Oil-seed Rape flowers that are
just beginning to wilt after 5 weeks of lurid backdrop, along
with sometimes thick heads & runny noses for even those not
normally afflicted with hay-fever.

Heron flies overhead.
We see far fewer Herons now that the Frogs and Newts have ceased visiting
the ponds to breed. Amphibians are having a terrible time
worldwide.
