We caught several Heron flights - mostly when the bird saw us when we went out
for a look about.

A Couple of hours later probably the same Heron made a fly-over.
This is about 1 second of flight before it disappeared over the house,
changing course a bit with the head not turning with the body.

Walking into the kitchen we spotted this heron wonderfully
blending with the trees and willow branches. This is the only
frame we got before it saw us through the window and departed.

This Grey Heron was stealthily working its way along the hedge obviously
hunting in the base. The walk and actions were too erratic for an
accurate time-lapse montage, so here is an impression. The whole
sequence covers almost 20 minutes.

The late start to the season has the farmer out harrowing, seed sowing and rolling
in an intense week of ground disturbance. This heron also liked the opportunity for
some easy to catch protein from the freshly turned soil, and didn't
seem the least bit fazed by being surrounded by black-headed gulls.
No sign of any Frogs or Newts for us at all this year, and the Herons have not
had their usual feast. Ponds have been frozen for just about every night
for many weeks.

The large ponds were STILL iced 3 weeks after the freeze-up,
and the heron is still hunting in the soggy meadow.
We didn't see it catch anything this time.

Many birds have a difficult time feeding when ponds and ground
freeze for extended periods. So we didn't expect to see a heron
here with the ponds frozen, but this one turned up nearing sunset
to explore some ground that had started to thaw in a sunshine
heat trap. Note the fully raised left leg as it crept forward
obviously needing to avoid brushing the grass and making a
noise.

Some 100m north of the farm entrance, at the Brook this Heron was hunting along the bank of
the brook behind.
Not the first sighting of a Heron down here, but quite unusual to spot.

The tree sweeping through the frame kicked the camera off focus, and here we
pick up the heron a few seconds on into the flight. Here we have no reference
to accurately align then pics, so we just try to make it look attractive.

First close flyover of a heron this year, so we have montaged 2
images less than a second apart to celebrate. Not that the frogs
and newts will be pleased when he/she spots them in the pond.

From the house we have seen 2 herons visiting our patch, but
this adult came flying along our East boundary, saw us outside
and promptly turned away to fly over the centre of our patch.
This single frame of the 12 we kept seemed to catch the light
'just right'.

Herons have become only occasional sightings since we lost all our amphibians
(whatever the cause) that they used to hunt. This is an accurate montage at
about 7 frames per second accurately aligned using the blurred tree branches
in the foreground.

This Heron was flying low over the arable farm land so we could
build these accurate montages. Bird spacings vary according to the
wind direction.
