Birds - Jackdaw Page 1

We have been regularly going out at sunset to hope to see our local Barn owl setting out on his evening hunt. Twice now, at different places, we have seen the owl being harassed by a Corvid, in one case never identified, and in this case definitely a jackdaw. As the darkness forces us back home the owl gets left in peace by the corvids as well.

The Buzzard then got disturbed from it's rest by a territorial Jackdaw. The jackdaw started about 2 buzzard lengths behind the buzzard in this accurate montage. We left the Jackdaw out for the next 2 frames as they overlaid the image of the buzzard in the preceding frames, but the Jackdaw was climbing fast and re-appears above the Buzzard for the last 2 frames.

The jackdaws have done very well this year. Although we do see large numbers together, the 'family group' of 3 to 5 birds is more typical - mum + dad + sprogs.

Not so elegantly seeing off a Jackdaw, this squirrel is caught in an wonderfully aggressive Kung-Fu posture. We would love to have seen this from the other side!

A 'brand new' Jackdaw with yellow beak edge and some downy feathers.
Can even a young Jackdaw be 'sweet' - we think this one gets as close as you can get!

Jackdaws are frequent subjects of the automatic cameras, but rarely present themselves in a suitable pose for publication.

This montage of a Jackdaw and Rook landing on either side of the tree stump lets us compare the sizes.
The beak size difference is enormous!

A young Jackdaw on the left has just received another beakful of peanut fragments. The nuts take a while to wheedle in pieces, so it is unusual to catch the moment.
