Another hour on a third landing for the Stock Dove, this time with a Wood Pigeon already perched. Similar size but different eye colour, no white flash and different coloured beak.

Our 2 regular full-sized pigeons (i.e. excluding the smaller Collared Dove) tolerating each other. On the left is the Stock Dove with all Black eye. On the right is the Wood Pigeon with yellow Iris and always keyhole shaped pupil we see in other photos of Wood Pigeons, but not in drawings in older ID books. Maybe it is a recent evolution (but worldwide?), or the artist in our old books thought they had a rogue specimen and painted the Iris as round. Can anybody tell us?

The Stock dove chick (In the broken Owl box) has been changing visibly each day. Here for a change it was setting facing to our right on a different piece of it's own horrendous dung heap!

2 days later backs to it's preferred position.
Next day, and thereafter the box was empty in what we assume was a successful fledging of the Stock Dove.

This single stock Dove chick in a broken Owl nest box is now mostly feathered, but a couple of tail feathers are still in pin (sheathed). This is also known as a Blood Feather which provides a blood supply to the growing feather.

3 days later the smaller of the chicks has disappeared - the box is wide open to predation by crows or similar. But the larger bird seems to be doing well with the feather 'pins' grown substantially in the 3 days. When the birds have flown repairs will be in order.

Our Barn owl box, originally used for nesting by Jawdaws, lost the side access panel and a pair of Stock Dove made a nest which now contains these two beautiful chicks.

A juvenile Stock Dove wanders over the woodland floor learning what there might be to eat.

The feather down and 'naked' beak tell us that this is a juvenile stock Dove teetering inexpertly on the edge of the bird table. We know of several Pigeon nests around our site and now assume one of them raised this youngster.

Next evening the Stock Dove visits again for this rather Quirky portrait.

We haven't seen a Stock Dove for many months. This one has made several appearances since this moment of discovery.

This Stock Dove looks so relaxed as it preens itself by the log, probably after collecting 'supper'.

This is two Stock Doves apparently messing about in the early evening. It was raining - you can see the water drops flying about.

Stock doves in daylight seem to have all-black eyes, but in fact the Iris is very dark brown you can only see in the right lighting, or with a little help post-processing a photo. This is a camera resolution crop of the head in the adjacent image lightened enough to see the brown ring of the iris.

The 'Tale of the Tomato'.
This squishy tomato survived with no more than a few pecks for almost 24 hours before the Grey Squirrel took it away.

Hundreds of Pigeons can be a nuisance.
One Pigeon can be a delight.

We know Wood Pigeons can be a menace for farmers (and indeed our own vegetable bed), but pigeons are wonderful birds, great flyers, look lovely and produce a variety of re-assuring 'coos'.

Having a chat at  the water cooler  the bird bath?
What is it with these two bird species seen together 5 days apart?
