Birds - Robin Page 2

Image of day on 15 Dec 2005

A robin inspecting a hole in the log for insects or spilled grain. Remember they don't have binocular vision but get the best view to the side.

After years of seeing Robins always chasing away any mice, suddenly this robin just ignores the mice in several frames.

The Robin may be chasing off the Fieldmouse (Wood Mouse), or they may both have startled by something to the right.

An unusual single frame with all the 3 different bird species all alertly looking to the right for reasons we can only imagine.

Genuine unusual single shot (modified images and montages say so in the labels).
Better a shouting match than claws or beaks?

Looks like a little territorial disagreement in progress.

An unusual view in the snow of an otherwise fairly typical aerial skirmish between a great tit and robin.

A fairly typical encounter at the camera sites, this time between a robin and a great tit. Note the capricious floating seed in front of the robin's beak.

The cold weather does nothing to sweeten the temper of the various visitors, and means closely matched combatants may be more determined to maintain access to the food - as this Great Tit from the normally dominant Robin.

Robin this time getting some resistance from a Great Tit. We expect the Robin 'won' anyway

The Robin doesn't argue with the arriving Grey Squirrel - just grabs a final beakful and leaves!

A Grey squirrel nibbles the remains from a half-chestnut husk while a Robin keeps a safe distance from the potential swiping claws, awaiting his turn.

A house sparrow may not seem very exciting, but this is one of the first of several sightings this year. Only seen here once last year, and then not for years before.

The change-over between day-shift and night-shift is always interesting.
Birds start singing a few minutes before the bats head for the loft.
Owls and Corvids squabble for only a few minutes at twilight, etc.
But we rarely get images of birds and mice in the same frame so 2 consecutive frames a couple of minutes apart, both showing a robin seeing off a mouse, suggest that birds are above mice in the 'pecking order', especially if the bird is a robin.

The Robin decides to avoid the relatively gigantic pheasant coming though the fence.

A quite common occurrence - a robin threatening chaffinch male.

But here you see the event in its original context, which somehow changes everything.

This is a bit of a fiddle, but the robin was originally off the edge of the frame (with tail missing) so we moved him across to make a more compact offering. Recently seeing more birds and rabbits together than we are used to - any significance unknown.

Silly one to show you, but the chance symmetry of the Robin between the ears of the Rabbit tickled our fancy.
