Birds - Rook Page 20

Whatever we 'do' to this image we can't make out the details. There are obviously two Rooks, one facing us and the other facing away. And they obviously not pleased to see each other!

Ah - in the twilight a couple of Rooks confirm their mutual attraction, said to last a lifetime.

A pair of Rooks looking at we know-not-what to the left. Does the Jackdaw (rightmost bird) wonder if it can nip in for a feed?

A flock of about 100 sheep has been systematically moved from field to field to our SW and South to eat the untidy crop obviously grown for them and as a green mulch. They have here arrived in the field across the main road. Rooks are equally enjoying the recently exposed ground. These 3 Sheep were strangely moving about pushing together to make a sort of 12 legged 3 headed creature. They could move apart but most of the time seemed to enjoy the comfort of each others presence.

Sparrowhawks and Kestrels and the Corvids really don't tolerate each others presence. This female sparrowhawk and a crow spent some minutes chasing each other about before the rest of the corvids arrived and decided the issue.

The sparrowhawk seem to be getting the same treatment from the rooks as the buzzards and kestrels. Being bigger than the kestrel it puts up more resistance, but not as casually as the even larger buzzard. This is a montage of 3 images (dozens of frames apart - don't try to read anything into the action). The top helps with identification and the bottom two give an idea of the action.

Here some details of the right-hand Sundog over the top of a lonely nest.

We found a rook lying dead outside the kitchen window. We have to assume a bird strike on the window, although we couldn't find any mark on the glass We moved the sad little corpse to the meadow site to see what was interested. To our surprise at about 3.30 a.m. the Tawny Owl landed on the meadow post, immediately flew down for a look and a peck at the dead bird, and almost immediately flew back to the post.

A rook is just sticking it's beak into the left edge of the frame. Pigeons mostly defend themselves by hitting the opposition with their powerful wings. Here we think the Pigeon is just preparing 'in-case'.
