Birds - Sparrowhawk Page 4

A female Sparrowhawk flies over the Kitchen bird table. Considering the speed that they fly, this pic is unusually sharp.

A very relaxed hunt mostly spent with one foot drawn up into the feathers, she was keeping her eye on something to the right she finally quietly put both feet down and suddenly plunged to the right. Left hand image is 9 minutes before the right pair, which is an accurately positioned montage perhaps a second apart.

This week the Sparrowhawk has replaced the male Kestrel as flyby tease of the week. Have always loved the mad yellow eye.

We believe this is a female sparrowhawk - normally viewed here as a 'woooosh - what was that' experience as a small bird exits existence :-( On a not very fine day a surprisingly good thermal raised this circling bird from just about photographable distance to a speck in the blue in a couple of minutes with barely a wing flap.

As she flew away she started powered flight, providing an opportunity to show the wings in action. This is very close-spaced - we couldn't determine the accurate positions.

This female Sparrowhawk flies right to left with a medium sized bird in her Talons and some of it's downy feathers stuck to the bottom of her beak. She turns in the air and flies back a bit further away where we got a better view of the prey - colour and size suggest a female Blackbird.
The 3 images are rescaled and exposure normalised to make a decent triplet.

3 days later this female Sparrowhawk - the female is a bigger bird than the male - makes a startling landing facing in the opposite direction to male.

After weeks of absence to female Sparrowhawk comes in to land on the Kitchen Window perch as the evening darkens.

Three days later in mid-afternoon the female Sparrowhawk makes another visit.
Photographically inferior but lovely to see.

Here is the Sparrowhawk departing.
Left to right the bird is perched, turns and looks behind, and dives down and out of sight. This montage is extremely stretched horizontally.

This female Sparrowhawk spent about 15 minutes standing on a 4m high branch about 15m from the house.

Scatching with that talon looks nearly as dangerous as a cut-throat razor!

The local female Sparrowhawk stops off briefly at the kitchen perch in the bright morning sunshine. The swinging Peanut feeder suggests that she either attacked a bird in it, or birds successfully fled in terror.

While the Kestrel was hunting on the south of the house, this female Sparrowhawk paused on the bird table on the north side outside the Kitchen.
The hunting pattern of south side flyby then followed by north side flyby has been the norm for the Sparrowhawk now for a few weeks. Actually 'flyby' doesn't catch the speed of these passes - several times faster than any other bird we see. We estimate at least 25 mph including a wide 180 degree turn.
