Starlings nest in the loft by a hole we had the roofer leave open. But this Starling was on the roof ridge with this leaf and flew off toward the main field with it, so the loft is just one of many nest sites.

Food for the Starling chicks - in this case it looks like a worm plus a fly.

Following sighting of only a few starlings, we were really surprised to see this elegant moving cloud to the south, rising up and landing for a cause we couldn't see. We estimate 1500 birds in this section you can see.

The 100 juvenile starling (and a few adults) flying over the Oil-seed rape crop and then diving down into it en-mass to feed.

A 'zoom' in on the top two wires part way along. The top row is slightly out of focus despite being less than a metre nearer.

This is a joining of 4 images panning along this rabble of Starling perched on the 11kV high voltage cables that pass by our house. Moving about to get them in view means the joins are imperfect.

About 100 juvenile starlings can be seen moving in a flock all over the area. Here they are perched on the 11KV cables over some Bullocks in one of the fields to our south. Perhaps the flies that accompany cattle can be simply picked out of the air - NOT.

A chance grouping of 5 starlings on the perch next to one of the peanut feeders. It is interesting to see the number of different breast feather variations.

This group of about 400 Starlings made a short but interesting series of swirling patterns against the late afternoon sky.

The Starlings were not a single group - this flock of about 80 seemed to appear out of nowhere, only slightly depleting the number on the wires.

From another frame of the flock of 80 Starlings, here is an extraction of 9 for more detail.

Flocks of Starling and Fieldfares plunder the hedges for Hawthorn and Blackthorn berries. Here a couple of starlings are plucking off all but the last two berries visible in this image.

This is the biggest group of Starlings we have seen this year, all landing in quite a spectacular moment (unfortunately not captured on camera) descending on this 'broken' ash tree about 100m south of our south hedge.

Ref: 20241221_d72_20241116_1039_062 140 starlings just landed in broken ash tree to south(r+mb id@768).jpg

From a bit closer here are the starlings, accompanied by one of the two local Carrion Crows.

These are immature Starlings - note the light coloured head.

We think starlings look wonderful. The bird on the right was calling.
