A juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker also visits the meadow post, but prefers ...

The combination of flash (lasts about 0.001 sec) and shutter movement blur (about 0.05 sec) has produced this rather unusual view of a juvenile woodpecker.

This Great Spotted Woodpecker juvenile (left) had us 'in stitches' as it decided that the head of a Pampas grass was a good place to wait to be fed. It could barely keep it's balance on the swaying and bouncing weak material, and the arrival of it's mother doubled the problem and arranged a sort of bobbing ballet of birds. Its a wonder we got any photos at all!

Finally aligning beaks, the mother (right) puts her own beak right inside that of the hungry youngster

We see several juvenile Great Spotted Woodpeckers visiting the peanut feeders for a quick high protein feed. These cages do block the Grey Squirrels, but this bird's long beak and slender head means that the cage is no barrier, and that's fine with us.

The bird spotted us and took his nut away to come back later.

We have lost count of the Great Spotted Woodpecker juveniles, now with the full spread from 'Feed Me' to 'I'll Feed Myself' including the 'I'll accept what's offered but find my own as well'.

We no longer see much of Great Spotted Woodpeckers on feeders near the house - at this time of year there is masses of 'natural' food available. But this juvenile sweeps in with aplomb to check out the hedge bottom.

A juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker arrives behind an apparently oblivious Grey Squirrel. When we first saw this we wished we had another frame a second or two later.

This juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker touches down on the meadow post and in half a second is already on their way again. Some (animal) visitors really don't like the photo flash (some 15m away) while others completely ignore it. We may see this individual again when they realise the flash is completely harmless.
We notice that Owls never react like this - perhaps sweeping car headlight beams are so much a part of their nightly patrols that it is just flashes of light are 'nothing unusual'.

From the top of the track-side Lombardy poplar a juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker launches itself downwards. Accurately spaced at 7 fps except for a frame missing between the 2 rightmost birds.

A juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker peers down the side of the tree-stump. The bird may be looking for food pushed into the bark as we do at another post.

There were 3 juvenile Great Spotted Woodpeckers in this tree at once, but true to form one of them flies off before the camera moves to photograph it. The bird on the right was having a bit of a peck at the Blue Tit nestbox but it is made of woodcrete so did no harm.
After a few years most wooden nest boxes get rendered unusable by Woodpecker damage.

We are sure that birds have to be careful using those sharp claws to preen the bits the beak can't reach. As this juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker is waiting for Dad to bring in some food you can see fragments of dislodged down drifting away to the right.

We don't know where they nested, but a family (well so far one youngster and 'Dad) of Great Spotted Woodpeckers has appeared. This juvenile spent several minutes at the kitchen perch and bird-table making so many moves that we used separate cameras to try to catch the action.
This first is the automatic camera at the kitchen window being manually fired ...

If you live in a town you are more likely to see Great Spotted Woodpeckers. A few sightings at the peanut feeder are supplemented by this pic of a juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker stopping off at the Meadow post.
