This Green Woodpecker flies high above us and lands on this Silver Birch mostly
obscured by trees closer to us. A creep along the path across the meadow finally
finds a clear view without alarming the bird again, allowing this pic.

If you prefer more detail of the lovely bird, here it is.
The red patch below the eye identifies this is an adult male.

After hearing and glimpsing the departure of the Green Woodpecker for
months we have finally caught an image of a juvenile lurking in a
Lichen encrusted stem of a Willow tree.

Here a green woodpecker spends a few minutes probing the pollarded willow at
the back of Duck Pond before launching back towards the centre of the meadow,
beak tip lost out of frame.

Mr & Mrs Green woodpecker - we hope they are nesting somewhere!
The male is the one with the extra red on the cheek.

No signs of the Green Woodpeckers breeding this year, but it may be.
Here is a visitor busy probing the ground in their usual way.

A couple of hours earlier that afternoon we had a sort 'if I
can't see you can't see me' type of sneaked portrait.

Green Woodpeckers mostly feed by probing the ground for ants and other insects.
Here the bird has scraped away some of the snow to get at the ground to probe it.

The trusty camera focussed on the Meadow Post caught this short visit of a male
Green Woodpecker.

What seems to be a regular individual juvenile Green Woodpecker visited the Meadow Post.
A few minutes after his last visit to the post we see him on the ground some 10m away
triggering the 'meadow camera'.

The green woodpecker is around all year, but usually only
detectable by his call and sometimes fleeting view of departure.
But we got lucky this week with an image from an automatic camera

When we first saw this sequence of Green Woodpecker visits over 2 hours we
assumed that it was the same individual. But the 1st and 4th (Top Left and
Bottom Right) images are of a female (no red under the eye) and the middle 2 are
a male. We do hope they have 'found' each other!

The juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker seems determined to see off
the squirrel, but it won't succeed.

Not so oblivious this time!

A less angelic side of Grey Squirrel behaviour. We hope juvenile
Great Spotted Woodpecker stops these close encounters before it
gets one of those sharp claws somewhere vital.

A juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker still thinks it can outwit the
Grey Squirrel - the adults long ago learned better.

This Jackdaw is particularly aggressive / confident / stupid / Testosterone driven
(you choose!) and launches itself at anything in its way including the
normally dominant Grey Squirrels.
Here the Jackdaw is trying to chase away a juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker
who may have wished it had launched half a second earlier!

"Boo!"
Before we actually saw a Great Spotted Woodpecker we imagined
from the name and noise they make that they would be a much bigger
bird. Here you can see the size relative to the much larger Jackdaw.

Closer inspection makes 'less vigorous' seem more like 'probably dead' :-(
The tree has broken off at about 3.5 metres high, and the upper section is in 2 parts -
the upper sloping section in this pic, and a piece originally between them about 1 metre
long here propped up by us against the base of the lower trunk still in the ground, with
a 70mm hole in the side. Its turns out it is upside down in the photo :-(

Here is the hole in the 1 metre section we find this interesting hole in the lower half.
Visually aligning the broken pieces (without transporting a ladder to get to the top
of the standing piece) suggests that the hole faced approximately north.
