This female Southern Hawker dragonfly spent a few minutes indoors for a some in-flight portraits. She was turning in flight here and partly out of frame.

The Southern Hawker Dragonfly nearly head on to camera. The maneuverability of these insects is amazing.

I see you!
A week later another individual came in for a few in flight images. Like all our guests they get released unharmed near where we netted them

This is a male Southern Hawker viewed from below (i.e. flying vertically upwards). They often perch in a sun-warmed Blackberry hedge to warm up before starting their patrols over the ponds.

After initially fighting at one pond, two unexpectedly pristine (for late in the season) male Southern Hawker dragonflies settled to patrolling one pond each for hours on end for a few days - lovely to watch. We brought one of them in for a little photo-shoot.

This Southern Hawker dragonfly landed on a Cypreses (from which this frond was cut) in a small cloud of pollen. We brought it in for a few pics in flight, of which this actually has the whole insect in view. One of the 4 wings is pointing straight at the camera - a useful illustration of the total independence of each wing in flight.

This is a male Southern Hawker Dragonfly which has become a regular summer visitor in the last few years. We finally managed to net this one for some portraits. The first image was taken in our flying insect setup.

This large & colourful male Southern Hawker dragonfly was quite accommodating for the few minutes before we released him to carry on guarding the main pond as his territory - i.e. looking for 'girls'.

Hardly a nick in the wing of this beauty despite being almost at the end of his life.

Speckled Wood butterflies like the edges of our woodland rather than the areas of full sun or shade.

This Speckled Wood Butterfly was a fairly cooperative flyer. These are 3 different flights montaged together. The right view is of the 'top' of the wings while the centre and left images are from below.

There are far fewer of these Speckled Wood Butterflies this year than usual, but this one provided a couple of separate in-flight portraits we decided to show as a single image.

In the last couple of years speckled wood butterflies have moved from occasional sightings to the most common butterfly here. Unfortunately the previous holder of that title - the Small Tortoiseshell - is becoming a once in a while siting. Anyway, this slightly tatty individual make a nice pic with lilac.

This is a speckled wood - the dominant butterfly LAST year and quite common this year.

In a patch of sunshine in the woodland where we have been seeing them for year, we found a few freshly emerged Speckled Wood butterflies (even if this one already has a bird peck).

Of the 3 speckled wood butterflies we tried to photograph in flight, only this slightly damaged (possibly bird pecked) individual was a really cooperative flyer.

One sweep of the net over these frond produced both the damselfly and this spider. Our quickly acquired Spider field guide indicates the ID.
