Mammals - Fieldmice (also known as Wood Mice) Page 16

Image Taken on 12 Sep 2024 at 01:51    Image of day on 20 Oct 2024

A few sightings of Fieldmice (Wood Mice) at the hedge bottom taken over 90 minutes. We have no idea whether this is the same or different mouse.
We notice 3 slugs on the ground - all from the right hand mouse original.
Over the decades we have seen many direct mouse-on-slug interactions, many of which seem to be mice licking the apparently sweet (we haven't tried it!) mucus that coats the slugs. Our best effort at catching this behaviour can be found at

Carrot tends to get nibbled for a day or so before suddenly disappearing. On the side of the tree stump is a harvestman spider that looks like it has FAR too many legs because the legs and their shadows looks very similar.

Fieldmice (Wood Mice) frequently take unusual interest in Leopard Slugs. We understand Slug slime is quite sweet and nutritious, and the Mice may lick it from the slugs!

And the same evening a fieldmouse (wood mouse) made it to the tree-trunk top and spent several minutes looking for food. Here he is eating a fragment of soft fruit. A leopard slug and tiny worm have also made the 1.5m ascent - no doubt much more slowly than the mouse.

We don't often catch slugs rearing up like this. We think fieldmice (wood mice) like to lick the sweet slime - don't worry - it wont bite it!

At the same site we see here a 'normal' Fieldmouse (Wood Mouse) accompanied by a 'Yellow Slug'.
Only our second sighting ever of a Yellow slug, the first one a few weeks ago.

A fieldmouse (wood mouse) sized Boxing day supper. Even has blackberries out of the freezer for desert.

Taken an hour after 'yesterdays' image there is still plenty on the table/log. For scale the log is about 8cm high at this point and the mouse can barely see over it.

The fieldmice (wood mice) have certainly found the new camera position to their liking as has a robbin and (inevitably) some rabbits.

We put out some stale shelled hazel-nuts and this mouse has apparently nibbled his way in to take away the Kernel as his prize.

We have zoomed in on the log to get some real close-ups of the flood of fieldmice (wood mice).

The return of the fieldmice (wood mice) after not seeing any all summer - better food and safer places to eat during the summer we expect.

Yes the fieldmice (wood mice) are definitely back, but only at the distant camera site at the moment.

Do fieldmice (wood mice) salivate in anticipation of a juicy meal? We think the earwig is about to be a midnight meal for the mouse, and we see saliva dripping from the mouse's mouth.

On the evening of the next day at the end of the same little log we think this mouse was starting to leap onto the log. Whatever it is actually up to, an unusual position to catch.

Is the top mouse about to use the bottom one as a trampoline?

Next day, at about the same time, we have a sort of 'what happened next' moment. We have no idea whether it is the same mouse.

If this leap was from the tree branch about 3 metres above the image would be movement blurred even in the 1/1000 sec flash. So this must be the end of a more moderate leap from the ground.
