This male Reeves' Muntjac Deer wanders quietly over the grass at the front
of Duck-shaped Pond.

A stroll down the disused track at 7 a.m. found us and this
Muntjac deer equally surprised by this encounter. At first he
didn't notice us and ambled left toward the Oil-seed rape crop.
Notice the horns 'In Velvet' and the little white 'fang' at the
mouth with his tongue hanging out. You can clearly see the tiny
hooves which always seem to us to be too small for the animals bulk.
In wet weather we often see deep slots made by them in the clay.

About half an hour later the Muntjac Deer returned, disturbing the Grey Squirrel
already at the site. These three images, taken consecutively at about 1 minute
intervals, tells the story -
"I'm bigger than you are".

The unusual juxtaposition in the middle image above at a better resolution even
shows the Muntjac Deers wet nose.

... where he took only a couple of mouthfuls before wandering on.
Reeves' Muntjac Deer here rarely seem to eat much of any one thing, much preferring
to eat a wide mix of grass, leaves and twigs.

This male Muntjac deer was sampling all sorts of 'green stuffs' as it
wandered round the pond, and here eat a single Blackberry
(bramble) leaf, taking nearly half a minute between first and
last images. Perhaps avoiding the prickles requires care! We
love his 'vampire' fang!

When he had disappeared behind the crop we hurried up to see
where he went. This was not welcomed by the deer who ran down the
weed-killed boarder of the crop and vanished into the crop on the left.

Reeve's Muntjac Deer are mainly creatures of the night, but here at noon out
of the Kitchen windows we see this male quietly foraging along the edge of
the main pond.

The male Muntjac Deer spent several minutes wandering up and down the main path across
the meadow. Bottom right is the same individual but lit by a final shaft of sunlight.

The male Muntjac Deer wandered over the rought grass meadow and found green
stuff growing in the shelter. He quietly ate in a chomping motion with the green
gradually disappearing into the mouth that is larger than it looks. Read these
images right to left and notice the open gape in the middle.

The male Muntjac deer made morning and evening visits to the pond
in one day. We think he looks lovely in the daffodils, which
show just how small they are.

Two male muntjacs (which we assumed to be a 'pair' until we
studied the images) were foraging in the pasture to the South.
This one watched us for a moment before wandering away.

This frame (not quite in focus) caught something we have not seen before - the
opening of the scent gland just below the eye, possible paired with the one on
the far side, about to mark a hedge twig. We had always assumed that stick ends
were 'pushed in', but this makes sense.

This male muntjac, frequently seen in Infra-Red 'trail' cameras,
found something to nibble in daylight & where we could get one of
the tripod mounted long lenses on him.
