Not MANY insects this atypical year, but those we have are staying about longer than usual. Here a Small White Butterfly enjoying nectar from the last few Water Mint flowers.

This one of the thousands of buttercups around is right by the back-door. This moth is about 9mm across - one of a family of micro lepidoptera that are fascinating but size makes them hard to study.

We don't see much of snails here, and after the rains were surprised to come across this large snail lying on its side to eat a closed Dandelion flower.

Two Snails on old Teasel stems. You can see the form of the shell patterns are the same, but the intensity and consistency are very variable.

Out first Snakes-head fritillary this year is a white one in shade for most of the day. The curving leaves are a delicate delight ...

We have a 'traditional' site where Snakes-head Fritillaries have survived (if not thrived) for the last 25 years. Each year we have to wait and see whether we get the conventional mottled purple (left) or the more subtle mottled cream and white varieties. This year we got both. Look carefully at the white flower to see the mottling. The single or double flower seems to be a random variation.

A fortnight later we have not found ANY of the normal coloured Snakes-head Fritillary flowers this year, though this doesn't mean they are not hiding somewhere else. This is our biggest clump hiding under a shrub.

The rabbits have missed this Snake-head Fritillary! The camera is near the ground looking up into the flower on the bank of a pond.

We have planted dozens of Snakes-head Fritillary bulbs over the years, but the only clump to survive is of the white variant, here photographed still wet with rain.

Our one and only clump of Snakes-head fritillary near a laurel bush is the white variant. The rabbits eat all the more normal purple type but leave these.

For some reason this year only a clump of the white variant of Snake's-head fritillary has flowered.

As chance, or maybe the nibbling rabbits would have it, our original mix of mostly purple Snakes-head Fritillary flowers is reduced to only a couple of clumps of all white. Here are 3 ever closer views ...

The White form of Snakes-head Fritillary seems to have become the dominant form here. Here is a double flower on one stem.

Surprise of the week was this Snipe making a perhaps 30 minute visit to the grass around. and banks of, the main pond.
Here is a selection of images, all through window glass for fear of disturbing the visitor.
