This Speckled Wood Butterfly was a fairly cooperative flyer. These are 3 different flights montaged together. The right view is of the 'top' of the wings while the centre and left images are from below.

In the last couple of years speckled wood butterflies have moved from occasional sightings to the most common butterfly here. Unfortunately the previous holder of that title - the Small Tortoiseshell - is becoming a once in a while siting. Anyway, this slightly tatty individual make a nice pic with lilac.

The plants world has gone crazy in the atypically benign November weather.
Here we have patches of Speedwell actually in flower.

This is the back of the IR beam sender that triggers the camera focussed on the top of the Meadow Post, with a still intact Spider's web now heavily frosted.

The fruit of the spindle bush is the only glaring colour clash within one plant that we know of. The orange colour is the fruits.

The spindle tree fruit and fruit case provides the only really strident natural colour clash we know of.

According to the 'book' squirrels only come out on mild days for a feed. Ours obviously don't have the same book.

Staghorn Sumac really turns a wonderful red as autumn progresses.

Sumach (aka Stagshorn) trees produce some wonderful autumn colours. Not so good this year but this one from 31 Oct 1999 shows the earlier leaf turn to good effect. We 'inherited' this tree with the house & it would take over the garden if we didn't keep hacking it back.

After planting a Sumac at out first house about 1970, moving here 1990 we found a couple of such trees in the front garden which we have allowed to develop into several trees. They are so robust they have to be hacked back every other year or so, but always come back thriving.

Our Sycamore trees are outstanding for a canopy of Autumn leaves.

One of the few sycamores not riddled with a harmless but unsightly black spot fungus takes on its autumn hues.

This Sycamore has managed to encompass the complete green leaves (bottom) through to dried out and ready to fall leaves (top) in a single multi-stemmed tree. It was the only tree this far advanced. The tree to the right is an oak of the same age - oaks do very well here - the land used to be called 'Oak Hill Furlong'.

This wonderful fly came to our attention. It is about 15mm long, looks wonderful, but is parasitic (lays eggs inside other creatures) so not very endearing.

A Tawny owl made a short visit in the falling snow just before 5 a.m. The bird triggered the camera twice with these results.

Some more air-frost images from our patch. First a teasel head. No doubt the seeds still in the head will be fine to germinate or get eaten by Goldfinches when it thaws.

The local Thrush also put in several appearances in the snow. The bird has started using a sheet of corrugated iron (intended to attract snakes in the summer) as it's 'Anvil'.
