The evening before the 'super blood blue moon' (apparently the first such triple combination for 150 years) all we could see of the moon was this ghostly apparition.

We struggled out of bed in the early hours for these images of the total eclipse of the moon at perigee (called the 'Blood Moon' in the press). By 6 a.m. fog had descended.

The moon finally rose unexpectedly far South this wonderful red colour - we processed these the next morning and used those images (from a lot a framing exposures) as near as we could remember the appearance.

Within only a few minutes the colour lightened. we have much better images of the moon features, but they haven't changed much for millions of years!

Those of you living in cities probably rarely get a view of the opposite sides of the horizon good enough to see that full moon only occurs when the sun and moon are on opposite sides of the sky.
First to view to the East for the rising moon ...

The last 'supermoon' of 2025 is here a few minutes from setting through a hazy sky to the WNW, as the sun rises glowing orange as it rises through the similar haze to the ESE.

A day apart the foot positions of this single individual are uncannily similar. And this was the only image on each of the days so it must make a simular approach and break the IR beam at the same time.

Walking down our concrete access track we spotted, but were apparently not spotted by, this male Muntjac Deer, with just stubs of the antlers, wandering quietly down the dew soaked margin between crop and the outside of our northern hedge, before quietly entering our patch though an access way we cut though the pig net years ago. This was at 05:40 a.m. (about 45 minutes after sunrise)

As the light show continued a pair of Mute swans winged quietly across the sky.

Before dawn this pair of Mute Swans flying over the fields was one of those magic moments we have tried to capture here. The pairs synchronisation of wing positions is exactly as it was. The montage is alternate frames from about 5 fps (so about 1 second of flight)

As we stepped out of the front door (facing west) we were immediately struck by this huge precision edged cloud along the horizon. On arriving at the North boundary we found this vast long band stretching in the north almost from west to east. Not wanting to risk missing the effect by walking back to get a more wide-angle lens, this is a montage of 4 adjacent frames taken at a 50mm lens setting and joined up later. We estimate it is only 30 degrees short of 180 degrees.

A little section in more details - the white cloud at this stage seemed to exactly align with the dark. As the cloud moved overhead the straight line illusion was lost.

At sunset the puffy white clouds over the whole sky turned to candy-floss pink. This is pretty much the sky and cloud colours we both remember.

At sunrise on Tuesday 4 Jan 2011 there was a partial eclipse of the Sun in progress at sunrise. We got really lucky with band of haze at the horizon colouring and dimming the sun a bit with the rest of the sky overcast. Here are 2 of the 39 frames we kept, never expecting to have another opportunity.
First when the sun just cleared the horizon (08:21 a.m.)
