A flock of about 30 goldfinches is often about the plot enjoying
the catkins. They are very skittish and you have to be slow and
patient for them to ignore humans. Here the flock is arriving at
a silver birch.

Now they have all landed in this one tree there seem to be more goldfinches
than tree! (genuine single frame).
The endless twittering of these flocks is a delight.

The Angle Shades Moth is very common, but doesn't normally oblige
with flying on request for the camera!

Lots of people get confused between blossoming of Blackthorn
(before leaves) & Hawthorn (with leaves). This animated image
switches between the two using exactly the same view a month apart.
The dates are in the bottom right corner.
Note also the emergence of Leaves, Cow Parsley, and Buttercups.

The apple blossom this year has been prolific. Distant shots never
seem to capture the feel, so here is a closer sample.

Very fine year for apple blossom now it has finally made it out.
But no hum of bees to go with it - 'silent spring' in this
regard.

7-spot ladybirds still dominate - haven't seen a Harlequin yet
this year that we can remember. Here it is adding a little spot
of red to the beautiful apple blossom.

A detail of the ash tree from yesterdays image taken from
the ground. The Ash trees have only been mature enough to seed
in the last year or so we don't know when they will drop
- rather wait and see than look it up!.

The ash tree on the 'island' outside the kitchen window now has
a lovely show of green/yellow seed heads. At night when we look
out with a powerful torch these positively glow compared to the
leaves.

ladies, this one photographed at rest in the sunshine, catching
the light unusually well.

We have been seeing male Banded demoiselles damselflies
fluttering around the sunlit hedges for a few days. Here is one
brought in for a little photo session.

The female Banded Demoiselle does not have the band on her wings
that her mate does. The sheen on the abdomen is exquisite with a
greener tinge than the males. In the recent warm days a 25m grass
strip between hedges has become a wonderland of these beauties -
about 4 males and a couple of females flutter gently around you
as you walk slowly along the path.
