A close look at a Red Admiral Butterfly with his figure-of-eight cross section
proboscis deep between Blackberry druplets.
Blackberries are actually known as an 'aggregate fruit 'composed of small druplets.

At 9 a.m. on a mid-September morning some warm early sunshine
brought out variety of insects into a east facing hedge.
A Red Admiral Butterfly with it's proboscis (just left of the more obvious
leg resting on the fruit) deep down in the not-quite ripe Blackberry berry.

Inherited with this house was this Red Apple cultivar.
Everything is red - the flowers, the wood, the sap, and all parts of the apple.
We have learned to enjoy red Apple Crumble!
The last few years has hardly produced any fruit but this year we at least
have loads of blossom to enjoy.

We inherited just this one 'Red' apple tree with the house.
The blossom is red. the wood is red, the fruit is red.
After a very poor show and no fruit at all last year, we hope for better this
year.
Red apple crumble looks odd but tastes good!

One inherited tree in the orchard is this Red Crab-apple tree.
Everything is red - the wood, sap, leaf tinge, flowers, apple skin and
flesh.
After a few years of almost no yield this year the tree is smothered in
blossom.
Red apple crumble, Red apple sauce ... slightly sharp but tasty compared
to most supermarket varieties.

A little Canadian colour in an English wood. Unlike typical UK
deciduous leaves, individual plant cells seem to go from green to
red very quickly - very few are orange. Decades ago a Canadian
Friend of Marie's commented on the gentle change of British
autumn colour, and at last we see why.

Red Oak is one of our few non-native trees. They don't grow
particularly well here but the glorious colours compensate.

Not a rare bird, but our first sighting ever of a Redpoll. A few
were in the hedge by the now soggy haystack left near our
boundary. Not seen since this sighting.

This is a couple of Redpolls from a flock of about 10. We have only managed to
photograph Redpolls 3 times over the years since 2013, and in 2016 at almost the same
date. Here we show two birds in flight over 3 consecutive exposures we estimate
at 200mS apart - one bird already moving fast and the other just launching.

This Redwing was some 20m away across the road in a Hawthorn bush/tree.
The 3 images (separated by a re-focus each time so over a few seconds)
caught the bird perched by a Haw, pulling the Haw off, and then beak open to swallow it!

We have been trying to get good photographs of Fieldfares. But it was
this Redwing, of which a few are scattered through the Fieldfare
flock, seemed to be slightly less nervous and could be
photographed through gaps in other trees.
We love the subtle blending of bird and foliage.
