On the west bank of Duck Pond we are still enjoying these colourful Crocuses.

A Pair of obviously cultivated Crocuses look up at us - or more likely the sunshine. They 'close' at night - this is as open as they get.

In the distance we saw a large dark bird getting the mobbing treatment from about a dozen Rooks, but we were unable to decide what the target bird was and assumed that this would remain one of life's many 'don't knows'. But the bird slowly flew in our general direction, and finally over an adjacent arable field and between us and the black poplars about 100m away. Well this turned out to be our first ever identification of a Raven.

On 26 Aug 1997 the duck-shaped pond developed a red algal bloom overnight that lasted a few days. This year the same has happened to the main pond next to the house. The moorhen continue to feed their 7 youngsters without any apparent ill-effects. The trails across the water are formed through the normal surface weed by the moorhen adults.

A small group of Redpolls were feeding on the frosty Great Willowherb seed heads outside the living room window. Our record show our only previous sighting was in April 2013. This first bird shows the characteristic pink breast.

This Redpoll has no obvious Red Breast. Redpolls come in several varieties: Common, Greater, Lesser, Arctic and Mealy (some of which may be different names for the same variant) and not usefully differentiated in our ID books, so just 'Redpoll' will have to do.

A Redpoll feeds for several minutes on the seeds from last years Great Willowherb flowers outside the Living Room window.
A search of our archives shows that we see one or more Redpolls every few years. We have always ID's the bird as a Redpoll, but our more recent bird ID books (i.e. published in the 21st century!) show an additional species - the Lesser Redpoll - which we think that this, and our earlier photos, probably is.

After midnight on the same night we see the female Roe Deer for 10 minutes.
The final shot looks amazingly similar to the start of the sequence above - while building the montage we initially thought we had made a mistake - but it is a genuine second moment.

The Rooks breeding is already well advanced, and they are collecting live food for the youngsters high in the trees above us.

The new log at the ditch generated an unusually high number of pics over this one night. It turns out to be a Fieldmouse (Wood Mouse) (or perhaps more than one) scampering about on the log. Here accurately montaged are 6 moments from the visits.

We first saw (and bought) a Romanesco Cauliflower in our local Tesco a few years ago, and haven't seen once since until one appeared on the Ocado supermarket site. They taste a little different to the standard varieties, but the Fractal pattern is so attractive we can't resist buying one!
Wikipedia tells us the fractal dimension is about 2.8 - look it up if interested.

A short savage storm late last year that brought down or broke several of our trees, impacted much of the local area - damaged hedges and trees can be found within a mile or two. Rooks normally see about half of one years nests survive for refurbishment come the Spring, but the 50 or so nests in the large Rookery to our west were completely stripped of nests in the storm. Hence unusually we see the trees all with freshly constructed nests. This is one of the 3 main nesting trees.

Here a couple of days later we discovered the hole with what looks like Badger bedding dragged out of the hole, but little more activity recorded on the trail cam.

Come day-time, the sun sweeps around the Round pond, the shadow of the tree on which this camera is mounted swings around with it.
Not quite the timed sequence it looks like, but you get the idea.

On a near windless lunchtime we see this close to perfect reflection in the water of the Round pond.

The clarity of leaf detail is a little reminiscent of prints by the master of illusion M C Escher, but without the magical ambiguity.

The Round pond and its surroundings now bare of most leaves. The buddleia on the left of the island and others around the plot have not dropped their leaves despite some hard frosts - the brown seed-heads have been left for the birds. Interesting to compare with the image for 22 Sep 2005 in full leaf (still in the archive for a few weeks).

This overgrown vista is 'Round pond' now sadly depleted of water and will soon become 'round bog' unless we get in and clear it somewhat over the winter.
