A few birds in a flock of about 50 lapwing.

We slogged though the mud around the farm perimeter for a better view, but before they came into view they flew back past us.

One of the delights of the winter is flocks of Lapwing (also known mainly outside the UK as a Peewit or Green Plover) sweeping about in the sky changing from dark birds to flickering white as they sweep back and forth, the change often sweeping through the flock in a wave as here. These 4 images taken within a few seconds.

We last saw any Lapwings 11 years ago (2011) on the last year that the fields around us were used as pasture. Stepping out of the back door finds a flock of about 8 were flying over, and the camera was swiftly swung up to catch 'tail-end-Charlie' flap their way across

About 200 sheep feeding in the adjacent field have attracted Lapwing. Here one of the flocks flying overhead

The lapwing and heron flew over the middle of our patch 5 minutes apart, and these were taken from just outside the back of the house. Lapwings are not often seen here, Herons are.

For once a small flock of Lapwing came close enough for some good images of a single bird in flight. Spacing is arbitrary.

The flock of 50 lapwing seems to be a 'loose' affair with groups breaking off to feed. Here about 20 Lapwing landed on the far side of the farm in an unexpectedly straight line. You can just make out the beautiful crests these birds often raise when perched.

A couple of days after the above one of the Lapwing got sufficiently used to us standing at the corner that we could get this pic. We had not realised their feathers contained so much colour.

The farmer hiring the field to our North and East has put out hay for the sheep when it is covered by snow. The lapwing decided the disturbed soil was a good place for a feed at sunset.
