Mammals - Rabbit Page 3

This fox disappeared at what we know is a rabbit warren and then emerged in the long grass obviously eating something. After several minutes it's head raised enough to see the remains being chewed over. We were upwind of the fox and were surprised it tolerated us and the camera noise. We couldn't find any remains next day.

We found this freshly dead rabbit on a path and moved it to this photo site, expecting to photograph a fox carrying it off. On each of the 3 nights we left it, this fox appeared, though it didn't drag it away as we expected. We have 5 images, 3 like the top image, and 2 like the bottom. We think it was probably disturbed by the flash and camera noise each time - some individuals don't like it, and others couldn't care less.

Is this Fox checking out the 'Rabbit Pantry', or thinking about using it as a Den. Previously the Foxes did not apparently interfere with the neighbouring Rabbits as they raised their cubs.

Is this adult Fox starting to think about evicting the Rabbits out of their burrow as one Vixen did last year?

A rather Kooky moment as this Fox glances up at the red glow from the Trail cam currently watching the Rabbit hole. This camera's IR lamp is almost invisible, but it is only about 1.5 metres away.

A celebration of Foxes visiting over a single night.
Judging from the tails and ear shapes we think this is three different individuals.

An hour later this Fox looks like they stumbled at the Rabbit hole.

This Fox waits hopefully for a Rabbit to appear at the Rabbit hole under this step. The Fox was out of luck this time.

The Sad tale the Rabbit and Fox ...
Mid-morning we found this Rabbit lying dead on the inside path of our East boundary. It was still limp and an examination showed no signs of injury or distress. It has just died within the last hour or so. We moved it to a photo site to see what would happen to it.
At about 2 a.m. this young fox arrived, probably couldn't believe it's luck, and dragged the prize away. We could find no trace of where the rabbit was dragged to. Better this outcome we think, than left rotting in a hedge somewhere.

"Interesting things always happen half off the edge of the frame" (Roy & Marie 2019).
As the daylight draws to an end this fox is really keen to get into the Rabbit hole!

An unexpected mini-drama over 3 minutes. As the fox arrives (top left) this Polecat decides to enter the Rabbit Warren in this mound (top right). The Polecat disappears into the mound for a couple of minutes as the fox wanders past the hole. The next time we see the Polecat is as it is leaving the hole 2 minutes later, with the fox watching it from the bottom left of the mound.

The same day (next night) as we see the Fox with a Pigeon near the east hedge gap, a Fox here carries what looks like a Rabbit past Duck Pond - probably also making for an exit to the east. There are 3 such, only the 'busiest' has a camera.
We judge 'busiest' by the depth of the track in the grass outside worn by the endless feet.

More usually we see a Fox on the mound an hour after dark. This individual seems to check under the bottom slab every night. It used to be the primary entrance to the Rabbit warren in the mound, but is now blocked with leaves. The main entrance is now at one end of the mound, but perhaps the smell of 'Rabbit' still drifts from the hole.

The Rabbit decides that the leaf high above is better than any near the ground.

A Rabbit (background) comes out as the day ends.
The Rabbit may have had some unpleasant encounters with Grey squirrels, and keeps a safe distance from the Squirrel.

This corner of the crop viewed over the farm road from over own east hedge saw this Hare ambling over the weed-killed margin. At the time neither of us noticed the Rabbit leaping away in the background.

The slug is elegant in its own way - we don't skimp on the size of our slugs! This is actually a montage to get a better view of the slug from two successive frames a couple of minutes apart, but the juxtaposition is accurate.

We were surprised by one visit by a kestrel (see 28 Feb 2007) and now we have another. This site is more enclosed and the bird seems to be flying from a clearing where we felled a falling tree a few weeks ago & had a load of Blackthorn removed by local RSPB volunteers. We think the claw contains a piece of rabbit rather than a whole rodent.
