Mammals - Hare Page 3

This Hare about 100m away from us across the south margin decides to depart and gave a nice little illustration of 'high jump' as they left.

Many metres from the safety of the surrounding crop field, this juvenile Hare is nibbling on the grass and some weeds at the front (i.e. visible from the house) of the main pond. Left is a view eating a leaf in 'suck-it-in' style taken through the kitchen window. On the right through the window of a room above the kitchen with a more capable camera.

In the field margin the Hare watches events from the conveniently short grass..

What looks like a young Hare outside the Kitchen window. This year Hares have appeared in our patch rather than on the farm's land. What did we do that was right?

Long crops seem to be handled by leaping over the top. This individual turned after the next leap to follow the easier path made by the farmers sprayer wheels sinking into the mud.

This Hare was quietly leaving the corn crop, the rear legs well forward of the front legs and not even put on the ground yet.

At low speeds hares don't really 'walk' - we call it lolloping in a very awkward looking gait with such unequal leg lengths. These 3 images are about 3 times more horizontally spread than reality.

A Hare's quiet lollop down the concrete road is watched by the female Pheasant as well as us. There are typically 3 or 4 images between each we show here. The whole sequence available on request

A closer view of a section of 3 images of the Hare from the longer montage.

The Hare stopped for a moment - watching us watching him.

An early morning outing disturbed this Hare that Lolloped down the bank of the farm track. This is alternate frames so the Hare was not that bothered by us.

Before the run above this Hare was ambling partly towards the camera. These images are shifted successively leftwards so that the montage doesn't overlap.
We have 'tidied' the grass to hide the repeating pattern.

A Hare running into the Oil-seed Rape crop.
The sequence is a bit offset as it changes direction, and it is roughly alternate frames as it lollops to the right, but it is as an accurate representation as we can manage.

A mid-morning Hare - this one at the East hedge gap.

This Hare is, for now, a regular visitor. This moment before sitting down really highlights the unequal length of the front and rear legs that gives Hares their characteristic gait.

The 'Eastern Hare' continues to appear.

2 days later an obviously different Hare makes one of their regular visits to the East hedge gap about 150 metres from the hedge gap above.

We are sure that the Hares in the surrounding field feel rather dispossessed after harvest and harrowing. Woodland are not quite their 'thing', but their occasional visits are most welcome.

A Hare spends a couple of minutes wandering around near the East Hedge gap. We have seen at least one Hare being carried back to the Fox earth to feed the four hungry cubs, and it is a relief to see that there are enough Hares to tolerate the predation.
