Reaching the corner of the plot, down the gap between our internal hedge and the fence was this male Muntjac Deer giving the Cameraman a long hard stare before quietly deciding to move into the hedge on the left.

An unexpectedly tender moment as the male Muntjac Deer (on the left) is quietly accepted by the female who stands still and looks quietly back at him as he mounts her just before midnight. These 3 frames over about 5 seconds.
Since we obtained these IR images, BBC Autumnwatch broadcast thermal imagery of the also small Sika Deer males having to obtain cooperation and permission from the females before mating. The Muntjac behaviour here may be similar.

The Muntjac Deer have suddenly started calling at night and visiting places we can get to see them. This is the male (with antlers) mouth open making his barking call just after dawn on a grey morning.

Standard reaction of our Muntjac deer to a human, This male (note horns and an interesting appendage at the rear) fled from our patch hurdling the fence and running off across the pasture.

Now we can see why the male Muntjac deer (image of 5 Jan 2008) has unmatched antlers - his left side is a single long point while the right has two points.

Awful quality in shade in the half dark through a window, this male muntjac deer spent a couple of minutes trying to down this windfall apple, but he did succeed.

In November we pollarded a leaning eucalyptus tree that would hit the house if it fell. A buck muntjac deer has found the drying leaves to his taste.

Pausing during the wrecking of our pond surround, this male Muntjac deer had a groom with his huge tongue.

We spotted this male Reeves' Muntjac Deer in our orchard as we left for a walk, but he quickly departed. We find him on the grass outside our south hedge. He gave us a look, but just decided to ignore us and continues his foraging, at one point starting to walk closer to us.

He suddenly noticed us standing still watching him, pause a moment, but ambled on his way.

This is the male Muntjac Deer slogging up the snow covered access track. The narrow legs sink right in and every step is visibly an effort.

Round Pond seem to be the major source of water for the larger mammals. This pond is in real trouble - it has a slow leak for years but the water table in now so low that we lose an inch every day. We have decided to stop daily top-ups of several cubic metres, and in any case topping it up may soon be illegal due to a hose pipe ban, and have installed a makeshift drinking trough for animals that expect to find water.

Next day walking at the edge of the meadow this male Muntjac Deer and the photographer had a moment of joint assessment before the Deer decided it was time to vanish into the overgrown edge of the path

A few days later a better look at the male Muntjac Deer. You can see the left antler 'in velvet' partly hidden by the left ear, and the white speck along his mouth line is his tiny tusk which only the male of the species sports on each side.

This male Reeves Muntjac Deer (with velvet antlers) seems to have had a serious argument with something sharp. Our guess is barbed wire or some other man-made hazard. Unless we find him lying sick there is nothing we can do.

At last a decent pic of 'our' Muntjac male. Judging by the unequal antlers and torn ears he is the same individual we have seen a few times in surveillance pictures. We were on opposite sides of a low hedge which seemed to give him some courage to stay, but not for long.
