Over a month since we have 'seen' a Muntjac female. Looks in fine fettle but not obviously pregnant.

The usual response of a Muntjac deer to the first scent or sight of a human is to flee. This one bounding along a well flattened trail in the grass along the hedge. The teats indicate that she is probably feeding a fawn somewhere.

Had not seen the Muntjac on camera or by eye for almost a month, but all seems to be well. We can't tell from this image whether she is pregnant.

A Muntjac deer pair came for a visit to the back garden/orchard on a gloomy day. This was taken in similar place & viewpoint to one of our long term favourites from 25 Apr 2005 - click on Muntjac mother & Fawn

30 hours after the sighting of a pregnant Reeve's Muntjac Deer we were delighted to spot this mother Muntjac feeding what looks to us like a very new Fawn. Mother was spending a lot of time licking the damp and tousled fur and assiduously cleaning it. Here the Fawn is suckling from the milk-bar.

Mother licking the youngster assiduously, spending time to lick the Anus to encourage it to defecate.

9 hours later the CCTV shows us the return of the little Reeve's Muntjac Deer family. As the day faded we saw this funny moment when the Fawn disappointedly checked out Dad for the presence of a milk-bar!

The Muntjac deer like we usually see them - distant and nervously moving away from us. We rather like the horizontal bars of light and tree shadows.

NOT a montage. We watched with amazement as the muntjac walked past the clearly visible fox without a qualm, being much more worried about us standing quietly about 100m away.

The head detail of the male Muntjac that was following the previous female. This is not the male deer we featured in January you can see by clicking on Muntjac male with asymmetric antlers Note the swollen scent gland and pit below the eye and the tiny tusk at the mouth which always makes us think of 'vampire muntjac'.

Don't usually get such a good view. He obviously saw us so perhaps he is getting used to us - 'mostly harmless'. This isn't as close as it looks (guess about 30m).

An hour after midnight this female Reeve's Muntjac Deer has probably been attracted by the smell of fruit.

2 Reeve's Muntjac Deer spend a few minutes quietly feeding together, and performing a little mutual grooming.
A sort of 'I'll Scratch your back if you scratch mine'

This Fox spent a few minutes investigating the main pond, but he was being watched from the island by a female Deer, and decided to depart.

A few days later we see similar behaviour at the hedge bottom site. We don't remember seeing behaviour before and suspect that this is one of this years new Deer extending their nights browsing into the daylight at each end of the day. This is the early morning ...
